A foggy autumn evening, soft rain whispers in the trees. A quiet dark silhouette sneaks through the graveyard park. We peer through the darkness from our car window – the silhouette is of a dog. All skin and bones, the shadow is that of a German Shepherd dog. We stop for a better look, but the ghost disappears in the grave stones.
The next day, just to be sure we were not dreaming, we went back. He is there. And once again – he isn’t giving us the chance of a closer view.
This is how we met Vulkadin (Wolf). Lead by the romantic concept of dog loyalty, we thought he is there, because he followed his diseased owner. When we asked around it turned out we weren’t completely wrong. Yes, his owner has passed away, but our wolf doesn’t wander around because he wants to. He was dumped there by the heartless descendants of his owner who thought it was the right place to get rid of him. Who cares about a home, food or care…
Day after day we went after Vulkadin with a handful of kibble. Week after week he came closer to us. He may be very stubborn, but not more than we are. Slowly, but steadily, the ice between us melted and we came to a point where the huge, frightened dog accepted our touch. Of course, we were planning to take him in once there is a space available at the shelter. So we fed him day after day. Until the day when we found him vomiting heavily and had to grab him and bring him to the clinic immediately. He didn’t resist.
Thank God – it was not the poison we feared. Once in the shelter – Vulkadin’s temperament underwent a dramatic change. Fear and mistrust disappeared and he became a friendly, vocal dog. Yes, vocal – he spoke. It seemed like he was asking the people who came – are you my human? Would you like me to give you my heart? Do you want to be my God?
Честито на изстрадалото момче! Блазе ни и на нас, че станахме свидетели на чудото, което превърна тъжното и плашливо куче от гробището в самоуверен и щастлив домашен любимец. Чудото, наречено обич.
To our huge surprise, just a few weeks later, the answer came to Vulkadin – from Alexander Mihaylov. Whilst his 3-visitation time lasted Vulkadin stopped talking to the people that came to the shelter. His search was over. His person – found. There was not a single doubt in any of them that their fate is to be together – it seems like it was understood from the first moment they met.
Congratulations to the boy that has suffered! We are lucky to have witnessed this miracle – the turning of a fearful, distanced dog into a happy, loved pet. The miracle of love.
