Duncan’s story has to be one of the worst from all the dogs we’ve had and you know that says a lot. We took her in from the street in a great urgency – a kind person had seen how a man crushed her scull with a shovel and fled. Then it was an urgent surgery you helped perform and in all the wild hurry neither us, nor the doctors checked to see her sex, so we never realized that the immortal Duncan is actually an old lady.
Duncan comes to Animal Rescue Sofia
We realize Duncan is a girl
We called her after Duncan McLeud – the Highlander who could never die. We never knew how correct this “diagnosis” was. When we started to see something more than a dyeing dog in her, we located her neutering tattoo in the right ear. What a shock – she had been neutered by the Brigitte Bardot foundation who neutered their last dog in Sofia back in the year 2000! This should mean that Duncan was at least 6 months old 13 years ago…
With no further ado Duncan was placed to live directly in the shelter’s office – she had been through too much hardship already in her long life, we decided she deserves only love for the rest of it. Besides, we had no idea that the Eternal Duncan has so much life in her; we thought she only has a few months ahead of her and wanted them to be ones full of love and care.
Thus, 2 years passed in a blink and granny Duncan became one of the free-roaming shelter dogs – most people never know there was a dog in the room as she prefers to snooze above all else. As most of our oldies do, she put on quite a bit of weight and the prognosis of her approaching passing turned out to be over-exaggerated.
But who would want to adopt a 14-year old dog with the most ordinary look and a crooked front leg? It is a question with an answer unknown – we are used to the fact that our oldies remain with us till their last day comes. That is why we made the so-called Retirement home – a little space in our shelter where the old dogs can have peace and quiet.
Having in mind that Duncan was a favorite among so many of the shelter-workers and helpers you can be sure that her profile was sent to every single contact we have abroad and she was refused every time in the 2 years past. Her angel is the same person who helped Mook, Anechka, Bogi, Mimi, Moritz, Hermann, Jacob, Ronja, Simon, Myrthe, Bojka, Leo, Chrisi and many other not so famous dogs is Susann – a logistic mastermind that managed to organize an amazing Canadian-German-Bulgarian miracle to help our most unwanted dogs – the “cripples”. It is her we have to thank for this miraculous outcome for Duncan.
By the way, her name is not Duncan anymore. She is now called Lulu and lives in a wonderful German home alongside 2 dogs that were rescued from Spain. She is incredibly happy! And this, as you can imagine is like a rocket shooting our motivation right into space – there is nothing more reassuring when times get hard than to see a dog you loved so much and thought so hopeless happy in its new home.
Lulu’s new owner wasn’t sure about our claim that the old lady plans to outlive us all. So, she took her to a good vet to see how she can help treat Duncan’s “broken old body”. To her dismay and our greatest joy the doctor said he has never seen such a healthy old lady and thinks the only prescription medicine that Duncan needs is LOVE and she already is getting plenty of it!
We thank everyone that donated for Duncan’s surgery, that loved her whilst she was with us, we thank Susann and Angelica for being so stubborn and finding a place for her, to the boys who drove her to her new home. We are blessed to be able to see so many of our dear “children” safe and sound in caring homes where they will be loved immensely till their last breath!
