News from the cat front

Earlier this month we wrote that like every city where the stray dog population is being controlled, Sofia is facing a growing stray cat problem. The cat colonies, kept small by hunting dogs are now getting bigger and bigger as the city is swamped by unwanted litters with no future.

At this point we are confined to working with dogs mainly. Our shelter is only for dogs and the cats are being kept in foster homes which really prevents us from doing anything on a bigger scale for the kitties. Meanwhile, spay/neuter is going well, don’t worry, it’s still free for all dogs and cats.

In connection with the quickly changing street reality, we need to improve our way of working with cats a bit. We offer a warm WELCOME! to our new cat-coordinator Teddy Kosturska:

Teddy Kosturska

You probably know Teddy already, with all those babies she has hand-reared for us, but if you don’t – read about her HERE. Teddy will be organizing our cat activities, so we can be more effective and help more animals. As a first thing with her new responsibilities Teddy has a request to make of the cat friends in Sofia:

We are looking for people to foster our kitties!
What kind of people are those:
> People who wish to offer a temporary home (1 to 3 months usually) to a healthy cat or kitten;
> People who are experienced in hand-rearing newborn puppies and kittens;
> People who are willing to foster animals with a special need (health- or emotion-wise).

If you would like to become a foster parent for our kitties and give them a place to stay while we look for a home for them, please send us a message! You can tell us a little about yourself and your experience with animals, please, also include a number that we could call.

And just to imagine what it is to have a cat fostered, we will finish this post with a short story in pictures.

Little Floppy was supposed to be a fostered kitty, but as a true agent, she managed to crawl under the skin of her fosters and their cat (also adopted through ARSofia). Of course – it is not often that fosters decide to keep an animal they were supposed to keep temporarily. But do consider – it is such a joy to foster cats, so easy and nice. And now let’s hear what Agent Floppy has to say:

So, here I come, to this thing called a foster home. There I find this sweet fat cat they call Tashunko.

The people in this house think they are very clever. So I tell them – I am staying here, I like this life, Tashunko’s tail is the best toy.

Boxes, blankets, cords – they let you do everything here, especially if they never find out.

So I attacked them at maximum charm power – a wet nose, a crooked tail, a blinky gaze. Tashunko was the easiest catch, he only pretends to be big and fat, but he is the same as me.

It took me a while, and I had to do my best in the games and innocent stares, but – it worked! What can I tell you, I am so irresistible, it is now holistically proven! I told them so in the very beginning – I am staying here!
