Nedelcho, a life for a waffle

There are people in this world that should never be allowed to touch animals.

There are animals that have suffered greatly from the hands of such people.

There are days when the pointless cruelty sinks you in so deeply, you begin to doubt yourself and lose hope of ever seeing a world where the kind and loving people will outnumber the ones who kill, hurt and brutalize…

But also, there are moments that can change a life forever. There are the little furry victims that look at you with all the love and gratitude in the universe, they are those who keep you going.

This here is Nedelcho. To his regret – he was not a homeless dog. He had a human. One that has fed Nedelcho barely keeping him alive. A human who has kept him in conditions so tight that he never learnt to walk properly. A human that has left him horrified of all human beings.

We found him on a Sunday. Shivering with fear, feeble and weary, Nedelcho was staggering along the road. Our interest in him terrified him. We could only manage to catch him thanks to two old waffles rolling about the car and the fact that his fingernails were long and crooked and his crooked little body had no muscle for him to be able to run from us.

Nedelcho is not sick. He is not genetically impaired. Good food and regular walks will in time turn him into a normal dog. Human kindness will wipe the pain in his eyes away.
The question “why?” remains for us to answer. Why would you do this to an innocent creature? Why would you lock-in a little puppy and see it live in hunger, fear and pain, day after day, month after month…

Nedelcho spent his first days with us sitting in the corner, his eyes round with fear anytime a human was close. As if he couldn’t believe that life had changed for him. That food can be real and abundant. That the hands reaching out to him will not bring pain, but caress.

It has only been a few days and already – so much has changed. Nedelcho is discovering friendship and freedom, he now knows that life is good and the future lies ahead of him.
