10 shelter animals in the new Sport TOTO lottery tickets

Posted on 23 November 2015

We are very happy to see thousands of “Pets” cards published by the Bulgarian Sports Lottery! 7 of our dogs and 4 kitties will be bringing luck to the people who buy their series of tickets. But what is most important to us is that more Bulgarians will be looking at homeless souls with love and hope, there is no way that some of it won’t remain in their hearts after that. Good luck!

After the storm at the shelter

Posted on 23 November 2015

We had a very serious storm at the Farm. Heavy winds damaged our external fence, a few clumsy outside enclosures tried to fly away, the walls of our gorgeous new yards fell down, many roof-tiles were broken on the large dog building, the internet cables were torn…

поражения (3)

The most important and difficult to fix is our outer fence. Although it is made of heavy metal it was practically torn in pieces. Today it is being repaired by our friend Stanimir, who has done great many things for the shelter already. We also have power shortage problems, the electricity has been going on and off all day.

поражения (1)

The animals are all right. Although Naomi the pig is really taking it hard. The stress, noise and flying objects have unlocked an illness in her and we’re having a very hard time finding a doctor who knows how to treat an ill pig. Unless “just slaughter her” counts for a decent diagnose of a friend…

болно прасенце (4)

Best regards to you from Hope, who is getting better despite the problems. The blood transfusion we performed on her in urgency has worked out and her blood count is going closer to the norm each day.

A CRY FOR HELP: Winter is coming – WE DID IT!

Posted on 15 November 2015
Olimometer 2.52

Whilst the world around us is going mad,
whilst people kill each other for black gold and religion,
whilst wars are burning, bombs exploding and men are kneeling to be shot…

Whilst everyone else sends peace and kindness to hell, taking an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, there is a small group of people who said „Je suis solidaire“ without much talk. Solidarity with the suffering around me, the weaker ones, the ones who have nothing – not even a voice to ask for help…

The world is different for us today. But not by more innocent blood being spilt. That is no news, sadly.
Our world is warmer today, it is a kinder world.

Dear friends of the dogs, Dear friends of ARS, Dear people,

From now on – and forever – the Farm will be able to provide warmth to every patient in the clinic, every shelter dog!

On behalf of all the dogs we care for, and of the ones we are yet to help as well, we wish that this kindness comes back to you a hundred times. May you never, ever have to be dependent to anyone or needing help. But if that ever happens – may you receive it like you gave it – generously and without asking for anything in return.

The appeal

Winter is coming!
Cold is coming, Ice is coming, Shivering is coming…

Dear friends,
this year, for the first time in the 5 years we’ve existed as an organization – we can provide warmth to ALL the dogs living with us in the dark winter nights!

give this idea a few minutes of your time, the dogs would be greatly obliged!

What’s this about?

It’s all about the purchase of 2 solid fuel boilers to heat up the dog building (floor heating) and the clinic (radiators) at the Farm! We need to raise some serious money if we don’t want our buddies to be cold again.

2 boilers would be really costly though. And since it would be difficult to raise the money we need for both – a Wizard came forth with yet another miracle!

This Wizard appeared in the form of an Anonymous Donor – ready to give the dogs the second boiler they need, as long as we all manage to raise the funds for the first.

So, here’s the magic equation: 1 boiler funded by us = 2 boilers for the dogs!

Why is it so important to do this?

Please, consider a donation, it will make a great difference to the lives of our animals.
Every modest donation makes a change for the dogs in need!

Our healthy dogs and puppies live in a separate building – “The Farm”, in cells that have little yards. This means there are open doggy-doors on both sides which makes it useless to try and warm air. To keep the dogs healthy we came up with floor heating. It is an inexpensive, yet sufficient way to give them enough warmth for a good life November – February. It can get as cold as -10 in the winter here.

DSCN8999 DSCN9000

The other building we need to keep warm is where all the injured, ill and recovering animals will be, along with the youngest puppies and nursing mothers – “The Franziska clinic”. It is much smaller and has 8 rooms, so it will be heated with panels. Warmth really means a lot to the most vulnerable animals at our shelter – the clinic needs to be at least +15 in winter.

How about these boilers?

We have found something really clever, clean and fuel-effective – Torch Heating Systems.

kotle_na_peleti1 logo-small

They were invented and manufactured in Bulgaria and are highly efficient. And that is very important, since we will be using them to keep dogs warm for years to come.

Besides being cost-effective we also chose Torch for the computer control panel. The boiler can work throughout the night without people having to fuel it. The reloading is fully automatic.

We were impressed by the machine and are thank Torch heating systems for the discount they made for the dogs.

Each 1BGN you donate = 2!

6 000 BGN (E3 000) is the full amount we must raise.
This includes everything – the boiler itself, the installation, heating panels and chimney it needs.

Every donation you make – IS DOUBLED!
If we do raise 6 000, our Anonymous Donor will double the amount so we can get both boilers the shelter needs!

Please, if you are able – don’t hesitate to make even a small donation for the dogs.
We have already helped thousands, and will help thousands more together.
This is the way to do it right!

Every person willing to help us reach this important goal can donate by bank, by e-pay, PayPal or on spot at the shelter.*

6 000 may seem like a horrible lot, but if only 10% of the people who like us on Facebook would donate just 1BGN – we are done!

* – you can send us a note along with your donation: “for heating”. But if you have missed that option – don’t worry, when we have an active campaign we consider every donation (apart from subscriptions) to be for that goal.

 Thank you!!!

A gift for the Farm – a new camera!

Many thanks to Maya Stanimirova who gave a great new camera to use at the shelter!

We are already using it for all kinds of happy photos of the Farmers:

Maya, you should know that the photos made by your camera are the dogs’ way to health, new people and a good life. A great gift!

Nadia and “Svetlo” of ARSofia – speakers at the ICAWC 2015

Posted on 28 October 2015

It’s been five years since we first visited the ICAWC and were astounded to hear the incredible stories, told by colleagues from all around the planet – about their work, their fails and successes.

A lot has happened in these five years. We kept learning, discovering new things, kept calm and kept on. In 2009 we began as volunteers at the municipal pound. In 2010 we took over Bulgaria’s biggest municipal shelter. And as of 2014 we have worked here – at our Farm, a shelter that is first of its kind in Bulgaria.

Our shelter. Established to save lives, to treat pain, to give hope and make wrong things go right. Bought and managed by all of us – the people behind Animal Rescue Sofia! And this is just the incredible and inspiring Bulgarian story we had the opportunity to tell our colleagues.

Nadia and Svetlio (known as Svetlo among our international doggy-friends) spoke in front of 251 delegates from 101 organizations and 39 countries. They listened carefully and in awe – about the miracle you performed, dear friends. About the raising of 250 000E in 3 months. In a country where the average salary is 300E, and the average pension – 100. About what people can achieve when they are united by a cause that knows no boundary of race, religion or beliefs: The Love of Dogs.

We are proud to have been able to stand up in front of colleagues from the whole world and tell them about what we did, together, here – in Bulgaria. And we will let you in on a secret. We all may live believing there is something wrong with us as a nation, that we can’t do things right in our corner of the world. That is totally wrong. It’s just that the Bad Guys are louder and we keep hearing their noise. But there are more of the Good Guys. We guarantee it.

We thank Dogs Trust for all the knowledge and contacts we have received thanks to their conferences and trainings.
We thank our friend Victor Barros for his hospitality at Aanifeira shelter, Portugal.
Great job, Nadia and Svetlio!

Telerik, a Progress Company supports Animal Rescue Sofia

Posted on 23 October 2015

With great pride and joy we inform you that the first walking yards at The Farm are now real thanks to the donation made by Telerik, a Progress Company!

Our little buddies now have a space where they can run and play without a lead.
And the happiest of all are of course – the puppies:

Now our animals will be able to come out of their cells during the week as well.

We are welcoming volunteers through the week as well! There is much fun to be had in the playground, donated by Telerik, a Progress Company!

The Farm: what, why and how we made

Posted on 04 February 2015

As you know, we’ve been working in the municipal shelter “Bogrov” for 4 years. Thanks to this, we now know how exactly NOT to build a shelter. This knowledge, combined with consultings with our colleagues with shelters from abroad, we managed to make the dog house in “The Farm” in a different and a better way.

This is from where we started:

Here’s what and why we did here:

1.       The capacity:

In “Bogrov” we had 500 dogs, many times – even 600. This is why we can say that:

–          The atmosphere in a place with 500 bored dogs is not good nor for the dogs themselves, neither for the visitors.

–          Doesn’t matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t give individual attention to every single dog. The lack of communication with people affects the dogs really bad – soon they start avoiding strangers and this makes them unwanted for adoption.

–          A lot of adopters couldn’t make their choice, when seeing 500 dogs in front of them. This caused what we called “fast choice” – people used to choose only the ones who are different. The rest of the dogs became unseen and stayed in the cages for years.

And this is why we decided to make “The Farm” with a smaller capacity –for 200 dogs. In this way, each one of them will live better, but also it wouldn’t affect the big number of saved dogs, because of their bigger chances for adoption. And faster a dog is adopted, faster his place will be taken by a new one.

2.       The kennels:

Each kennel has an inside and an outside part.

Many dogs in one kennel is never a good idea – soon or later they start fighting. The only worse thing is the complete loneliness. So, the options for big kennels with many dogs or smaller single kennels were out of the discussion. Double kennels appeared in our minds, but this would cause a new problem – when one out of the two dogs would be adopted, the remaining dog would suffer for his buddy. This is the reason why the kennels in our Farm are for 3 dogs each. That way if one of the dogs is adopted, the remaining will still have a friend and time to get used to the new dog.

Of course, there are also dogs that don’t get along with other dogs. Usually these are ex-pets, not stray dogs. So, 8 of the kennels are single.

3. The canals are outside the kennels – to avoid infectious and spreading diseases. Beside, in Bogrov we couldn’t give them toys, because they always ended in the canals. This problem is also solved now.

4. The floors are by polyurethane inside and polished concrete outside – easy to clean and great for disinfection. The aisles outside are rugged, so that the staff and the visitors wouldn’t slide when it rains.

Two of the kennels are also rugged – especially for orthopedic patients, with unstable walk – to avoid slipping.

 5. Inside, the kennels are closed with windows, instead of bars. The reason is simple – in each premises there are more than 20 “doors” to go in the outside of the kennels – if there were bars, the dogs would live in a constant flow of cold air.

 6. The heating:

Practically, it is impossible to warm up a building this size. In Bogrov we tried everything – radiant heating, gas, electricity and none of them moved the mercury. This is why we decided not try warming up the air and we made floor heating – that way the dog could just lie down on the floor if wants to get warmth. The floor heating will help us to keep the floors dry in the winter.

Time for gratitude:

The warmest and sincere gratitude to Mr. Dennis Smith, who donated for the reconstructions of our brand new dogs’ guest house! Thank you, dear Dennis,  for helping the hundreds we have and the thousands we will have in this home!

Our boys and girls who helped with everything they could!

The volunteers who helped us paint!

Well, dear dogs, congratulations for your new guest house!
