A hospital at the end of the city – 06/2017, part 1 – updates

Posted on 16 June 2017

The “Franziska” clinic is working full speed, d-r Marincheva and d-r Ilieva cannot sit down for 5 minutes in their hard working days. We start with a report on the heroes whose treatments you provided last month.

Steffie is doing well

The amputation is a fact, but Steffie still has high leucocytes in her blood count and the vets will continue her antibiotic treatment for a few more days. She will soon be all right and ready to start her vaccination scheme.

IMG_0560 - Copy

We will wait for now the last leg we haven’t treated – there is some crepitation in the joint, but it’s possible she will grow out of it in the coming months. Right now it’s most important to take her out of her box so that she can start to walk little by little.

Tinkerbell is walking

Tinkerbell’s surgery was successful – d-r Hristov performed an ostheosynthesis on her shoulder bone. Unfortunately she came up with a high fever the day after. All the tests we ran on her are negative, she is on symptomatic treatment as the vets try to figure out the source of infection.

IMG_0803 IMG_0812

There’s no way we will let her go like this, she has too much love to give and she must make it.

Best regards from Ochko

IMG_0860 IMG_0857

The wonderful Ochko is in the end of his recovery after the complicated knee surgery you gave him. He still needs to be easy on it, although he is one bouncing character. But he is doing very well in general.

John Doe, Grant, Billy and Roshka – the war on heart-worm

john doe grant billy

John, Grant, Billy

Our boys’ hearts are all now beat freely. Everything is all right with them, they’ve all finished their therapies successfully – ready for a new life ahead.

Only Roshka left. She finished her pre-medeciation and will be taking in her dose of immiticide (the drug that kills the adult worms in the heart) in three doses next week.

Poor little Teddy

For a second day now Teddy is in the foster home of d-r Ilieva. Not because our 8-month pregnant doctor doesn’t have tasks in her little personal time. But because he feels and eats better when he is with her.

He is still critical. And if he makes it, he will need surgery on his badly broken front paw. He is too young and fragile for any of that now and needs to concentrate on surviving the head injury.

Mathilda’s puppies

They aren’t exactly her puppies – she never gave birth to them, she nursed them as hers. She gave them a second life… and maybe that means she truly was a mother to them. Distemper took our dear Mathilda, but the puppies she cared for survived.

IMG_0843 IMG_0851

Today we have 4 healthy, happy heroes. They are still in quarantine, but have already started with the vaccines and it will soon be their turn to go out in the sun.

Thank you

Our warmest regards to all the guardian angels who donated for the treatment of these sweethearts! We will introduce you to the new patients in the clinic this month in our next post.

Meanwhile – the senior volunteers will be expecting you for walks this weekend. Welcome!

HOME: Boris, Elvira, Lincoln, Allegria, Chase, Katy and Oliver

Posted on 13 June 2017

Friends often ask us:
How is it that you are such bloody optimists?

And the answer is simple:
Because we have the honor to witness so much kindness!

Deaf Boris, with worms in his heart

It’s not exact to say we found Borko in a village, as we almost ran over him with our car. Completely deaf, the kind angel didn’t hear us approaching and made us stop to see what’s up with him. He was all bones, confused, but very friendly, Borko was probably abandoned at that very spot.

boris1 boris11

Deaf animals cannot survive alone in the street. And dogs as kind and lovely as Boris also should not. We took him in. D-r Marincheva carried on his test and blood-work and… our gentle boy turned out infected with the deadly heart-worm.

Marina Yordanova came to the shelter with the idea of adopting a young, small-sized dog. She put her hand in Borko’s cage, stoked his velvet little head, he looked at her with his huge kind eyes and… a true bond of friendship appeared out of nowhere.

boris12 boris (8)

Thanks to your kind donations, Boris received the complicated treatment he needed to get rid of the heart-worm. It was one month of antibiotics, then the Immiticide shots, then another month locked up in a tiny cage (so that the dead parasites wouldn’t clog his heart)…

Boris went through too much hardship. But it was not for nothing and he was not alone. Today the deaf, doomed to die from heart-worm Boris is the loving friend of Marina. Living his second (or third?) life next to her…

boris (5)

It’s simple, right?
How could we be pessimists?

The abandoned Katy and Chace

It was the end of this winter. And they were 3 tiny little angels, abandoned between the living blocks in Banishora district. Just reared from their mother and left to die in the snow, three bundles of desperation and hunger – brown and simple, worthless and unwanted babies.

Puppies of this color are often overlooked. But these three had a destiny to be happy. Turbo was adopted in Holland. And Diezel (now Chace) and Mercedes (now Katy) were adopted together in a most wonderful family! Just as a child really needs a sibling, there is nothing better for dogs than to grow up with a friend.

merzedes diesel (5)

So, the Daumesnil had two children, and they now also have two dogs! We really thank Francois Louis for his wonderful choice and wish everyone in their household long years of happiness together.

Tiny Elvira

Lovely little Elvira was left in the shelter by her owners. They decided to give her a de-wormer, she threw up a roundworm and they decided she has the tapeworms and everyone will now die. We tried to explain that this is normal, there is nothing to worry about, but – they left her.

елвира elvira

Of course, such a tiny angel, so friendly and sweet is bound to go to a wonderful home. Even before she was out of the clinic, Elvira met her true friend – Evgenya Savova. We’re sure their life will be full of laughter and fun!

The amazing Allegria

No need for words. You can see for yourself on the photos – the happiness that Alexander Mihaylov brought home to his sweet daughter Raena…

all2 all1 all3

All the best to you, dear kids!

Ill Oliver

It was the fall of 2016 when we picked up Oliver from the Bogrov municipal shelter with a severe skin problem. The kind granddad spent long months in treatment until he was finally “rewarded” with a diagnose of chronic illness. That is another way of saying “eternal shelter inhabitant”…

But this was not the faith of the kind granddad. After a long life of trouble, the boy found his salvation in the heart of B. An amazing person and friend of animals whom we can only look up to.

B. doesn’t like to be thanked or tell anyone of the many animals she rescued. So, we will only say: “THANK GOD YOU EXIST”. And wish Oliver a long and happy life, as he couldn’t be adopted in a better place.

Lincoln the Fireman

We at ARSofia really love firemen – in the years of work we’ve met many noble man from their ranks. We admitted Lincoln on January the 10-th – our heroes had dragged-out our huge boy from the bottom of a very deep shaft.

IMG_0948 linkoln (2)

Amazing! So kind, so playful – a young Caucasian Shepherd with an amazing attitude to the world and the creatures that inhabit it. With a big adoption issue – his HUGE size… It took Lincoln half a year of clowning about for every potential adopter, but nothing happened. We wondered what this bad joojoo was – and he was waiting for his people all this time.

IMG_2741 IMG_9626

Today Lincoln lives with the wonderful family of Nya Doychinova-Petkova. His home is in a horse stable with 30 horses and another huge shepherd dog, with which they are of course – first buddies.

IMG_0410 IMG_0543 IMG_2683

We went to visit them. And what else can we say, except “I wish I was Lincoln!

21 sweeties in Holland

Posted on 09 June 2017

After a month without transports and adoptions, the first thing we did in the end of the quarantine was – TRANSPORT VIII/2017.

We sent 20 angels and the sweetest mommy in the world to a new life in Holland – where they will be loved family pets, and not unwanted mutts.

The journey was successful and 21 tails greet us like flags from the homes of their foster families. At the start of a brand new life, 2000km from here.

We thank all our friends, colleagues, volunteers and donors for their support – it takes so many kind hearts  for a puppy to cross over from the Ditch to the Dutch…

So here are the little mice you gave happiness to this week – the way you knew them at the Farm and in the first steps of a happy future they never even dreamed of…

One-eyed Mommy Ella and her 5 babies

Abandoned outside a village, mommy Ella gave life to 6 furry babies. Emaciated, nursing and very, very hungry, she listened to her instincts and started stealing hens. But although she looks like a fox, she is not at all cunning, and the villages quickly found out.

18235959_1991885897712237_695249324_o IMG_0193

The next time she tried to find something to eat, Ella was severely injured and lost half of her eye. One of the puppies was also killed. Then, a kind neighbor stepped forward and hid the rest in his basement, looking for a solution for the whole family.

17834895_10158554833095335_3399872256612541228_o 18077324_10158554833070335_1215410112179764767_o

Elly came into the clinic with a badly infected eye and very thin. She had to go through treatment and keep nursing at the same time. And she did such a fine job! Huge, fluffy, joyful and healthy – her pups are an example of good mother care.

eta (3) eta (1) eta (2)

D-r Marincheva removed Elly’s eye and closed it, we reared the little ones and she finally started to put on weight. We’re so happy that the whole family travelled together to their foster home – this way their adopters will be able to keep the family close.

Our best regards to everyone in the chain of rescue – in three months we managed to turn a village tragedy into an Amsterdam fairy-tale for 6 good hearts. Healthy and smiling on the green grass…

Venus and Williams from Gorni Bogrov

We admitted two tiny scared sisters who were dumped in the village center on a spring night. We named them Serena and Venus. A day later, we stumbled upon this tiny little guy at our door – so very alike them, there was no way he isn’t their brother. So, we raised them all together and named him Williams.

18644235_223773184794376_1008131713_n 18643566_223774418127586_2006865512_n

Besides looking alike, the three really were a close family. They lived in quarantine for quite a while – vaccinations, neutering… and no complaint ever. Serena was adopted locally, and Venus and Williams found their people in Holland.

The Scotts

Silky Keeva (above) Fynn, and Marshelly are three puppies someone dumped in a trash shoot. When they were brought we had no room and the same family kept them at home for vaccinations.

fynn (1) marshelly (2)

Such gentle and clever souls, very loving and smart.

Litter D

daniel daniella
Daniel and Daniella

8 huge black monkeys (with a white sheep in the heard – Donny). Of course, dumped from someone’s back-yard. It doesn’t cost anything to just abandon a box of pups in the trash, and why not repeat it in 6 months, and then again…

deyan didi
Deyan and DeeDee

The 2-month work with a litter so large in numbers: 24 vaccines, 68 deworming pills, 200 kilograms of puppy food, 8 spay/neuter surgeries. (and this is without counting the re-vaccination during our quarantine, the food supplements; the treatments for 3 of the babies; the time that the vets, keepers and volunteers invest in keeping the puppies happy and people-oriented.)

diliana dimiter
Deliana and Dimiter

True luck. Because for puppies this large and so dark it’s crucial to be rehomed at the youngest possible age. If they grow over 6 months of age on the shelter, this usually means they will stay here forever…

dolly doni
Dolly and Donny

Martha and Masha

Found abandoned in the village Bistrica, the sisters are really lovely – two of those most cuddly and friendly babies.

18643927_223770071461354_757923863_n 18643472_223770331461328_1621756050_n

There definitely is a connection between the color and attitude of dogs, as the sweethearts of this type are always very cheerful and friendly creatures.

In Holland

We continue

A big hug for our logistics masterminds Vivi and Nadia, for doctors Vicky and Polly, for drivers Marty and Valio – each journey on our “life-line” is such an amazing adventure, sometimes makes your hair turn gray.

IMG_0197 IMG_0199

It might look like “yet another” but we know it is “the Journey” for the dogs on it. And it’s worth all the nerves and problems, the tons of paperwork and crazy organizing of so many people, thousands of kilometers away…

Update 03/07/2017

Update 09/06/2017

The funds for the three angels have been raised!

>  Steffie’s operation will be carried out ASAP.
>  Tinkerbell needs a couple of days to fight the infection before her surgery.
>  And Teddy is starting to eat on his own…

Keep your fingers crossed for them!!!

Initial post: А CRY FOR HELP

We admitted so many new dogs to the clinic for stationary treatment this week.
Most of them are going to make it, but these three angels need your help to survive…

What happens when a one-ton car drives through a three-kilogram puppy?
– Something very bad. And in Steffie’s case – all your legs are broken and you are left to agonize by the road bank…

steffie before

Lovely, gentle Steffie arrived almost hopelessly broken, but turned out to be a true fighter. She already went through one very difficult surgery before the quarantine – d-r Hristov applied an external fixture to her broken right hind leg and it has healed.

18318023_1670640649632557_581571915_o 18289886_1670640399632582_1589431547_o 18318204_1670641089632513_1693863095_o

Now it is time to amputate the front left leg – the shoulder joint is completely luxated, the nerve damage is 100% and the condition is final. There is nothing else that can be done, the leg has to be removed.

IMG_0558 - Copy

Steffie cannot get up. Despite this, she always tells us when she needs to pee, so we can take her out of the bed. Steffie is in horrible pain. Despite that, she always kisses the hands that are touching her, grateful and loving. Steffie will fight for her life like a lioness. As long as she gets a chance.

The costs for her surgery will be BGN 200.

Lovely. Kind. Smart. Gentle. Tinkerbell is a dog with a huge heart and an even bigger problem. We don’t know exactly what happened to her, kind people from her neighborhood brought her – unable to stand and with a badly broken shoulder.

The fracture is very severe and a complicated orthopedic surgery has to be performed. The recovery will also be uneasy. Still, the girl has every chance to make it, as long as we’re able to provide her with the operation she needs.

tinkerbell x ray

Her friends in Druzhba district have already raised 140BGN for her. 380 BGN more are needed. Please, help her walk again if you can…

There is nothing scarier than a baby, fighting for his life…

Teddy теди

Dumped in a trash shoot with an unimaginable trauma to the scull, Teddy’s life is hanging by a thread.

The little guy needs 24-hour care and goes home with us every evening, so that we can continue to give him his medications every 6 hours, feed and water him with a syringe.

IMG_0316 IMG_0553

We are fighting hard for him, but Teddy’s condition remains critical. He really needs NutriPlus Gel, and Autrauman silver patches.

The additional materials will cost 60 BGN.
(If you want to purchase the things directly – you are very welcome!)

If we manage to save him, he will also need help for a plastic surgery of the paw, as he is missing a lot of tissue there too and the wound couldn’t heal by itself – a skin transplant will be needed. We only hope to be able to get him there…

Can you help?

The total amount needed for Steffie, Tinkerbell and Teddie is BGN 700.

The Farm is once again – open

Posted on 02 June 2017

Dear friends,
we are really happy to inform you that the Farm shelter is open to visitors again!
Thank you for being with us and helping us overcome Distemper – to contain the infection, provide the best treatment for our ill kids – your help has made the difference between life and death for so many.

The Farm is through with Distemper. Everyone who had the virus is now healthy and well. Only little Krayo, the puppy with pyoderma is still unwell, but he is no longer ill with Distemper, he has a bacterial infection that he has promised to overcome.

IMG_9907 IMG_0080
Farewell, angels…

The final score: we’ve lost darling Benjamin, Mommy Matilda and 3 of the puppies she gave life to… We cannot say “just 5”, although the death-rate could be ten times higher, because we will always miss our dear Matilda.

Our hats come off for the back-breaking work of the clinic team – d-r Marincheva and d-r Ilieva, interns Kalin Spasov and Michaela Kanovska, the keepers with huge hearts – Dessy, Dimka and Maria. Friends, you have our utmost respect for everything you did this month, you are our heroes!

pyoderma (2) IMG_9987 IMG_0071

It’s official: we are open every day again, from 08 to 18.
The Farm shelter and The Franziska clinic are functioning normally again and the dogs are so anxious to see you, that you can hear cracking in the air. And it’s from all the energy they stored after a month of walklesness.

The first thing we did with the lifting of the quarantine was… TRANSPORT VIII/2017!!!
20 sunny faces between 4 and 5 months and one-eyed mommy Ella replaced the Farm cages for soft beds in Holland!

IMG_0181 IMG_0191
Ella and her puppies said goodbye to the shelter

We will let you know all about them when photos from their new life come in. Right now we’re doing everything possible to find spots for as many dogs as possible, since adoption rates are lower in the summer.

IMG_0267 IMG_0274
Regards from Sandokan and Toshko

The first thing that happened at the clinic after we could again move about were the surgeries of two orthopedic patients who were urgent – Sandokan (for torn knee ligaments) and Toshko (for the removal of a plate he no longer needs). Both were operated successfully by d-r Hristov yesterday. For Toshko this is the final round and he should be OK from now on, for Sandokan – keep your fingers crossed.

IMG_0249 IMG_0254
Teddy… our first new patient

After we opened doors, the first urgent patient was tiny Teddy from Ovcha Kupel. Found in the garbage bin as you see him here. The tiny baby has a severe head injury and is fighting for his life. The next few days will be critical for him, keep your fingers crossed for Teddy.

Regarding admittance: we really thank all the foster homes for being with us in this difficult time. We will try to get to your babies ASAP, but please have just a little more patience with us, the first ones in the line are the pups from the quarantine – their health depends on this.

IMG_0300 IMG_0304 IMG_0306

And here are some cat babies that are almost completely independent and need a good foster home – if you would like to give them a hand in having a good childhood – they’re waiting for you in the clinic.

Our kindest regards to you, from people and animals alike,
we continue straight on!

VIDEO: Disability is a matter of perception – Elena

Posted on 24 May 2017

It was two years ago when we first met Elena.
Someone had abandoned her with both right legs severely damaged.
She was helpless alone outside and couldn’t cope on her own.
This was her life:

At first, it seemed like a fracture had healed in all the wrong ways on her right front leg. But when we took Elena to x-rays, it turned out both legs on the right were badly damaged – and the pain was excruciating.

DSCN7500 DSCN7504

It took many months and several complicated surgeries by d-r Zlatinov until Elena was set free of her pain. She was awesome, she was brave, she was so very thankful – and the miracle worked.

Despite all the progress she had, our sweet lady would forever keep her greeting paw in a “Hi, five!” manner. So what, we thought, that makes her even sweeter. No way such a lovely lady could remain unwanted after all this suffering. And thus… the wait for love began.

13765712_10157117222900335_8260377425448510839_o 16463632_1187009134746878_8654346584728394423_o

Elena was everyone’s favorite friend at the shelter. When the volunteers would take her out walking she’d make a few quick steps to the nearest suitable location, lay down and wait for her weekly tenderness. Such a gentle dog, so kind and patient…

Two years passed, but there wasn’t a single question about Ellie. Maybe it was her disability that scared people. Or maybe we weren’t being persuasive enough with the candidates who wanted a loving pet. In any case – what was happening to Elena was absolutely unfair.

She remained unwanted for two whole years.
And then… the time came for Elena’s second miracle.

Our amazing friend Selma, who has re-homed hundreds of our kinds in Holland, came to visit in the summer, to choose some of our pups for transferring to her shelter. Selma met Elena. Selma fell in love with Elena. And Selma made a promise – to look for the people who’d love her for the amazing angel she is.

It took another 6 months for that to happen. And it did. Two months ago, we hugged Elena for the last time and send her on the long journey to Holland…

00 елена 16487056_1187009068080218_7698550770594980738_o

She was greeted and treated like a princess.  And for the first time in her life, she was in comfort, peace and quiet. Clean and loved, she went on long belly-scratching “walks” and had the time of her life getting ready for her new home.

And what a home it is!
Elena was adopted in a lovely Dutch family, where a loving old man was struggling to fight dementia, his wife by his side. The family had recently lost their dear dog and the man was looking for it every day…

Today, Elena is not only someone’s rescue.
She is also a rescuer herself.
The little angel is saving the heart and mind of her old friend every day, doing everything she can, so that he feels the comfort and company of a true friend…

17948513_10154518724993947_2099344130_o 17948588_10154518724858947_2060857153_o

We thank our Destiny for bringing us to this point. It’s so easy to forget how much Good there is in the world… But we cannot. Because we see it every day.

And we cannot help but feel honored and humbled by all the amazing people we meet. Thank you… Thank you!

United against Distemper, an overview

Posted on 22 May 2017

A donation of puppy food from the team at Woodward Bulgaria

If it weren’t for the quarantine and you could visit the shelter last week, you’d find The Farm shelter angry and moody, with a team on the brink of exhaustion and despair.

On the wall:
– a list of the dogs ill with distemper and the ones who show symptoms (by hours);
– a list of the tens of life-saving drugs and materials not available due to lack of money;
– a list of the foods, necessary for the ill and risky dogs not available due to lack of money;
– an endless list of debt to different warehouses and providers, left unpaid this month, due to overspending for the ill animals.

A little Hell on Earth, full of desperate people and suffering animals. Tears, nerves, sadness, helplessness, hopelessness… and death.

We asked you for help.
And you helped us, dear friends!

obshto dariteli
In-kind donations that were brought to the shelter and Pets&U stores

Your donations have provided:

-a full set of medication and materials for the animals already ill with distemper;
-tests for early diagnosis of the animals in risk;
-serums, supplements, good food for the ill, weak and the puppies (for 10 days);
-revaccinations with a DP (Distemper and Parvovirosis) for all the puppies up to 6 months of age.

The truth is that this is a rare occasion in Bulgaria – so many people who generously unite around a common cause, no hate, no suspicion, no splitting. From a good heart, out of love.

We thank the hundreds of donors that took part in yet another dog miracle.

ваксини (1) ваксини (2)
DP vaccines for a re-vaccination of all the puppies currently in the shelter

We thank everyone who sent their support through bank, e-Pay, PayPal or DMS, in our collection boxes at the Pets&U stores.

We thank the people who chose to donate medications and materials for the clinic, as well as the donors, who sent or brought materials for cleaning, disinfection and medications from humane pharmacies.

We thank a special friend of the Farm for covering our unpaid bills for food; the team of co-workers who collected money to pay or electricity bill, we thank Kizomba Maniacs for organizing a fundraising party.

We thank you for being here, for keeping our back. Animal Rescue Sofia has been saving lives 7 years already, thanks to your kindness and generosity. There are no words to express our gratitude.

The best appreciation card would probably be our good news:
Blind Ikey and paralyzed Zlati are stable and send their regards

Although all of the un-vaccinated animals in contact with the disease have contracted the virus, we managed to keep the infection confined to the quarantine ward where it began. We hope our severe measures to contain the Distemper will be enough and there would be no new cases.

The quarantine will be prolonged till 01.06.2017.

Although the immediate crisis is under control, there is still great need of HELP. We are grateful even for the smallest donation.

After the most urgent medical bills have been covered, currently the shelter needs most of all – food. Especially puppy food of high quality.

If you are able to help – use this option as the best cost/quality product, so far we have enough puppy food for the period of quarantine:

Puppy food

We seek the best quality dry foods, with a high percentage of protein and fat.

Happy Dog has a great ProfiLine for kennels, in 20kg bags that aren’t designed for puppies, but would be excellent for our youngsters and are very reasonably priced:

-Sportive 24/16

-High Energy 30/20

-Race 34/24

Richter Pharma: 02 / 927 99 66;

Krayo is the only one still in the worst phase of Distemper…

Thank you!

From the ARSofia team, full of hope and gratitude,
wishing you luck, happiness, health and… hope your kindness comes back to you triple, dear friends.

And just to let you know how the problem is handled…

4 of the 7 puppies Mathilda had nursed have made it so far, pray for them

Farewell, Mathilda…

Posted on 18 May 2017

Distemper took our Mathilda.

The mother whose puppies were ran over on the highway, who nursed 7 abandoned babies back to life is now gone. Distemper took our best girl in only two days.

She started coughed a couple of times, her temperature peaked, she lay down… and couldn’t get up any more. We tried everything, but achieved nothing. We lost her forever.

They say dogs don’t have a soul. That they cannot think, they don’t know gratitude, guilt or love. That their behavior is formed by instincts and reactions, they are “just” animals.

Mathilda was nothing less than a person. And if she had a human body, she would also be “a saint” in the eyes of people. Dogs like her come once in a million and remain in your heart forever.

Mathilda was a black angel. A gentle, clever, obedient and delicate soul. A devoted mother, a faithful friend. If there is no Heaven for Mathilde, then there is no heaven at all.

Forgive us for not being able to save you.
Forgive us for being able to help you save the babies you loved.
Forgive us. We will always love you, dear girl.

We continue the fight against Distemper in our shelter clinic.
We thank the people who have already sent their help – our circumstances are really horrible.
If you can help us, even by very little – please, do…

Point Desperation: Distemper

Posted on 16 May 2017

Nothing is worse than the feeling of helplessness. Sensing you’re losing control, that the most important things are beyond your reach, that you can only sit and wait whilst your heart bursts into thousands of pieces.

Day after day we come to work in silence. It’s a torture. Who hasn’t survived the night, who is worse today, who has developed symptoms..?

An invisible plague is stealing our children. Their warm eyes are quietly fading, the gentle faces have less strength to push into our hands, their bodies becoming weaker and weaker until they become so light, they fade away…

Pain. One that makes you howl.
And on top of all this – we’re unable to provide everything necessary for the treatment of our babies.

With the help of the donors from yesterday, we’ve been able to cover 2 unpaid medication bills and make 2 new orders for the most necessary serums and antibiotics. Much more is needed, at the price of over 650E. We don’t have good food for the babies and ill dogs. And although we’ve stopped paying anything, but medical bills – we’re going nowhere.

Even the smallest help is appreciated.

Please help us treat them, buy tests, get better infusions and have serums for everyone.

Rest in peace, darling Benjamin… Dear, dear boy…

A CRY FOR HELP in the battle with the distemper

Posted on 16 May 2017

Things are bad. Despite all measures taken, the distemper keeps on spreading. Yesterday we made new tests, just to make sure, but some of them were positive.

You know some of the infected dogs, because last week we introduced you with the animals that arrived together with the sick puppy.
Mathilda, the hero mother is sick. Her adopted puppies are sick, too. Two of them already passed away.

Zlati, the dog hit by a car and fought paralyzis, now fights for her life.

Ikie, our gentle blind boy…

Dear friends,
We thought we’ll be able to fight the distemper alone, but after two weeks in the battle, we are exhausted and broke. With an epidemic like this, not only the medicines and vitamins are a lot, but we also use a huge amount of gloves, good food and disinfectants.

Can you help us?
You can donate via bank, paypal or epay here.

For our patients every help matters!

Mother’s tear

Update 18/05/2017

Distemper took our angel Mathilda…
She is gone.

Original post

It is a dark night, but the highway is not sleeping. The lights of the passing cars and trucks illuminate some small puppies and the attempts of their panicked mother to gather them, to save them.

A truck driver stops to have a coffee in the nearby gas station and notices the puppies. He feels sorry for the dumped family, but what can he do? Some minutes later he goes out to see the broken – hearted mother standing near the corpses of her, killed by the cars puppies. She doesn’t seem to care, whether the highway will kill her as well. It is just a matter of how long – how many minutes, hours – before she looses her life in agony too. He doesn’t know how to help, what to do. He remembers had heard of a dog shelter near Sofia,  “The Farm” shelter, so he sets off, not knowing what will happen next.

It is a dark night. Two human hands take the newborn puppies away from their mother’s warmth. In his heart, the human knows that what he does is wrong and this is why he chooses the night for his accomplice. He throws away the unwanted puppies near a road, but no one sees him – his hands are clean, his consciousness – calm.

Someone finds them. Not knowing how to help, what to do. He remembers he had heard of a dog shelter near Sofia,  “The Farm” shelter, so he sets off, not knowing what will happen next.

It seems that the cry from the box took Matilda out of the apathy she felt when she arrived. One look was enough for her to realize these were not her babies. But it was just another quick look for her to decide they can become hers.

It was destiny gave both Mathilda and the 7 tiny newborns a second chance. And this was how faith in humanity was restored…

The arrival of mamma Mathilda and the 7 puppies happened shortly before the cases of distemper were found in the clinic. Dr Marincheva and Dr Ilieva are fighting the black guest, but we all know the chances of puppies that are so tiny are not very big.

But we also know that without Mathilda’s care and the warmth, without her milk and love, they will be doomed.

Mathilda is happy to be their mother, she likes loving them. Although sometimes, just sometimes, we can see the sadness of her loss in her eyes.

16-heroes happy in Holland!

Posted on 02 May 2017

It’s been a week since we last waved goodbye to the 10 veterans and 6 puppies of Transport VII/2017.

The group has arrived all safe and sound at two destinations – Astrid’s shelter, where 10 of our adult dogs are given a chance to be found by loving families; and Danielle’s foster home, where another 6 little mice will be rehomed to good people.

Well done to Marty and Valio for this quick and untroubled journey.
And here they are, our lovely souls, who are now somehow completely different – smiling in Dutch…

The adults

Let’s begin with the bestest of the news – the first ones adopted.

Rayna was the first one to go home!

The second one was Boyko the funny yellow boy.

The journey was a little rough for Masha, she has some troubles with her legs. Astrid’s team is taking extra care of her and she should back on all four in no time.

Kali – smiling as usual….

The youngsters

Danielle is one extraordinary person. She has already rehomed hundreds upon hundreds of our puppies. Here you can see the youngest travelers – riding the train with her. For socializing!

Danielle brings each one of the puppies she fosters to all sorts of places. They don’t only ride the train, they also go shopping in all kinds of stores, they take car rides to the lakes nearby, meet and greet other dogs, cats, people and everything that is good in the world.

Thank you for giving them this new life, dear friends!

On the way back, the van didn’t travel empty. It brought back food, treats and toys, raised by our long-time friends Betty and Aleidus Koers, the adopters of Sandy. You can see him send you regards on the photo. We rescued Sandy from the Municipal pound of Seslavci as a death-row dog, 7 years ago…
