Despite that this traditional act of cruelty was banned by the vilage mayor, the croud of 300 people, full of mothers and their children, gathered for this barberic ritual called “trichane” for another year yet. Dogs from different households are being rollercoasted into a river as means of making them “better guard-dogs”.
Videos and images show the so-called “tadition” being pulled-off unpunished once again. See HERE for the full report made by besove.com.
Although this ritual is absolutely prohibited by Bulgarian law, the authorities do nothing whilst the villagers explain:
“In Spain they hang their dogs after every hunting season, they kill tens of thousands of bulls in coridas… The EU has no right to tell us we’re barbaric – the dogs don’t get hurt at all.”
Despite all the promices and efforts, animal cruelty is still not a crime in Bulgaria.

To use the ongoing abuse of animals in other EU countries as an excuse is ridiculous! We fight abuse all over the world. A crime remains a crime!
Because they murder in other countries this would legalize it in yours? Your countrymen and women come to work here amongst us – will they bring these traditions to us? Rather educate yourelves what makes a good guard dog a good guard dog – than believing in old wife’s tales. My dog would attack you and eat you alive – without all this – just because she loves me! Your dogs fear you, so they will never guard you, but fear you – Educate yourself about animal behavior – it might open your eyes.

Ahh…another example of a long cultural tradition that ‘should’ be upheld on the grounds that it is a long cultural tradition. Like slavery. Like oppression of women. Like whale hunting, rodeos, seal hunts, shark fin soup. Like child labor.
The animals suffer no harm? Then I think that the best possible way to train human guards from Sanja and elsewhere is to subject to the same experience and see if they find it helpful for their training and harmless. How about water boarding, too? I’ve heard that makes better guards of human beings–both those inflicting it, and those suffering it.
I’m sorry but inspiring terror does not produce dogs more likely to protect people. It does produce terrified dogs, it does damage to their psyches, if not their bodies.
Bulgaria: join the western world. Establish your credentials for humanity: enforce the present animal protection laws rigorously, and extend them.

Schneidet diesen kranken Menschen das Gehirn raus, da ist doch komplett was schief gelaufen – ich fordere Strafe für diese Menschen und ein absolutes Verbot, auch nur in die Nähe eines Tieres zu kommen. Es ekelt mich an, einfach widerlich und krankhaft

Some cultures also practice FGM “Female Genital Mutilation” because it is their “cultural tradition”. It is my experience that generaly countries with a large, poor, illiterate, socio-economic population tend to stubbornly continue these kind of barbaric “cultural traditions”. Obviously BULGARIA is in as great of need of books, computers and teachers as many African nations are.

Dear friends,
there are many animal wellfare issues in Bulgaria that need solving, and this is just one of them. It is the same picture as you would find in many southern-Europe countries and is no prescedent, unfortunately. NGO’s are doing all we can to prevent the neglection of such “traditions” and to turn Bulgaria into a normal European state as regarding animal wellfare.
